Will a Blackberry curve from Verizon work without the data plan?

So I’m planning on buying a blackberry curve from craigslist to replace my old phone but I was just wondering if it will work without the data plan because I heard that when you purchase a blackberry from the verizon store they force you to get the data plan. Does anyone know if it’ll work without the data plan? This is for Verizon, I know for other networks it works, but I want to know for Verizon.

Verizon will not allow a blackberry to be activated without the data plan. It’s required regardless of where the phone is purchased and it’s not negotiable. One other thing, make sure the blackberry is a Verizon-branded Curve. Verizon will not activate non-Verizon-branded phones on its network.
